How It Began….
In the winter of 2020, our church became aware of families in need of reasonably priced winter clothing. What started as a coat drive turned into a vision for a dignified shopping experience for men, women, children, and infants. We named the store “Faith’s Closet” because the store was started in faith that God would provide to “Change Lives by Christ’s Love” to those in need in our community. It is our prayer this thrift store ministry will bless our community.
Why is our store open on Sundays? Isn’t that weird for a church?
We are so glad you asked!
In assessing the needs in our community, we discovered many families in economic need have to work on Monday through Saturday, meaning Sunday is their only opportunity to look for reasonable clothing. Jesus himself was questioned by the Pharisees when he did “work” on the Sabbath by healing a cripple. Jesus gave his answer in Matthew 12:11-12:
“ He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.””
Our shop was also opened inspired by these words from Isaiah 58: 6-9:
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness[a] will go before you,
and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
Then you will call, and the Lord will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.”
Where do the proceeds from the Faith’s Closet go?
